Activate the Nitro Group Before DNA Breaks
Metronidazole, tinidazole, and secnidazole share a 5-nitroimidazole scaffold. Susceptible anaerobic and protozoal cells reduce the nitro group into reactive intermediates that damage DNA and kill the cell.

Follow-up protects against reinfection
Treat sex partners, avoid sex until all treatment is complete and symptoms resolve, and retest sexually active women at about three months. Do not use NAAT before three weeks for persistent disease.

Secnidazole granules are not dissolved
Sprinkle the entire 2 gram packet onto applesauce, yogurt, or pudding. Swallow without chewing within 30 minutes and do not dissolve the granules in liquid.
